Roof Rack 2

My Subaru has a roof rack which supports a cargo carrier used to transport fishing gear and other stuff.  Unfortunately, the stock attachment for this cargo carrier eventually caused the carrier to begin to buckle.  They just didn't put enough internal support into the shell to ensure that wind and other drag factors wouldn't fatigue the material.  The solution was a new cargo carrier roof rack that bolts to the existing cargo carrier and acts as a stable base for the cargo carrier.  I also added tie-down loops on the roof rack that permit carrying 2x4s and other materials on the top of the Subaru.  It works really well for small loads when you don't have access to a truck or you just don't happen to be driving your truck!

You may notice a slight curvature on the rack frame - this is an artifact of the plate welding to the 1-inch square tubing.  Definitely not an anticipated result, but in retrospect it adds something to the overall look of the rack structure...

At the time I built this rack I didn't have a pipe bender and formed all the corners using 45-degree cuts with TIG welds of the seams.  Today I would have formed these using a pipe bender to give a smooth 90-degree bend to the corners...
